Me the blogger as a Korean who's been brought up only in my city Daegu, South Korea, downtown and universities are a good place to visit with a readily accessible restrooms(several parks and Gyobo bookstore),benchs to sit on and trees. You can see about those places on this blog.

Places that u can visit just right(0~5minutes of walk) from a subwaystop :
Keimyung university(keimyung university and gangchang stops), Seomoon market(seomoon market stop), Downtown(jungangno stop), Chilseong market(chilseong market stop), Gukchae-bosang park(kyung-dae hospital stop), Macheon mountain(munyang stop), Chorae mountain(ansim stop), Yeungnam uni(the subway stop will be constructed in 2012)

Most universities in Daegu are like a park with many trees and some benches. At university cafeterias u can have a not-bad meal at 2000~3000won which is not a fast food at cheap prices. (I don't know about other universities but the cafeteria of university i graduated(keimyung uni) anybody can visit to have a meal)
And with a international or global lounge u can attempt to make friends with local or foreign friends.
Keimyung and Daegu universities are confrimed to have such lounge.

Mountains right from a subway stop.
1. Macheon mountain at munyang stop .
(munyang station is just a few stop from Keimyung uni stop)
2.Chorae mountain at ansim stop
I haven't yet visited chorae mountain myself. but as I pass thru this Ansim subway station I could see mountains nearby Ansim stop. i downloaded this photo.
Korea is relatively safe country to walk around but if u are a woman it's always safer to take a friend with u when visiting a mountain.

Getting a house or lodging in Daegu
1. Won-room(원룸) is a suitable form of house for living in Korea for over six months.
The price is usually 300,000 won per month with downpayment of 2000,000 won.
It is consisted of one room + bathroom+kitchen
There are no bed and closet in wonrooms.
2. Gosiwon(고시원) is a economic(money saving) form of house for visiting Korea for some weeks.
payment is due not by daily nor weekly but only by monthly.
The price is usually 200,000 ~350.000won monthly with NO downpayment at all. (but u might have downpayment of 10,000 won for the key to your room.)
Gosiwon is equipped with a bed and a small closet. Kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, and refrigerator are shared with others.
It is consisted of just one very small room with your own room key. but oftenly Gosiwons provide cooked rice and internet access(by having one shared computer or by being equipped with a internet line in each room) You are not allowed to make quite a noise and you are not allowed to stay with another person in a gosiwon room.
3. Jjim jil bang(찜질방)
If you are really tight on travel budget, then instead of motels(35,000 won in Daegu) , you can use jjim jil bang as a place to stay overnight sleeping. JJim jil bang is a public place shared with others and is consisted of sauna, bathroom, sleeping room. Be sure not to lose or be stolen your key to the locker while sleeping.
